MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – Congestion pricing in New York City will start in early January, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Thursday.

The tentative start date for congestion pricing in New York City is Jan. 5, 2025.

Under the new congestion pricing plan, cars entering New York City’s central business district below 60th Street in Manhattan will be charged a $9 toll.

In June, Hochul put a halt to the original congestion pricing plan, which would’ve charged cars a $15 toll.

“As I said from the start, a $15 toll was just too high in this economic climate. That’s why our plan cuts the daytime toll to $9 for cars,” Hochul said.

State officials said the new congestion pricing plan will still allow the MTA to fund $15 billion in improvements to the transit system.

Some of the improvement projects include extending the Second Avenue Subway to East Harlem, upgrading signals on subway lines, improving accessibility in stations, and adding hundreds of new electric buses.

“By getting congestion pricing underway and fully supporting the MTA capital plan, we’ll unclog our streets, reduce pollution and deliver better public transit for millions of New Yorkers,” Hochul said.
